I custom-build 3D printers to interweave nanoscale, biological, and other functional materials, including anatomically accurate next-generation biomedical devices.
I attended the 2011 US FOE where I saw an amazing talk by Hod Lipson entitled, The Shape of Things to Come: Frontiers in Additive Manufacturing. This was my first exposure to 3D printing, and I knew I had to work in this space. About 1.5 years after the meeting, we published our first paper on interweaving biological and electronic materials, entitled 3D Printed Bionic Ears, which now has nearly 500 citations and sets an exciting new course for our group and the field of 3D printing in general.
