We develop novel light-based devices and techniques for sensing, metrology, communications, data processing, and nano-manufacturing. Our research focuses on modeling, fabricating, and characterizing individual lasers and photodetectors, photonics-based sensors, instrumentation, and integrated circuits and developing unconventional materials processing techniques (e.g. writing 3D waveguides and micro-optical devices within porous films).

I am also the director of the Institute for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access, which supports scholarship, innovation, collaboration, and leadership in the areas of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access at all levels: faculty, staff, students, and K-12 outreach/public engagement.

FOE enabled me to learn from and connect with emerging engineers from around the world who are tackling global challenges.
