2010 EU-US FOE Participant Information

We look forward to your participation at the 2010 EU-US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, to be held September 1-3 at Jesus College, Cambridge UK

Meeting Format

The symposium runs from Wednesday morning through Friday lunch. In order to achieve the objectives of the program, we ask that you attend all sessions of the entire symposium. This meeting is unlike other meetings you may attend where it is possible to pick and choose the sessions in which you wish to participate. In addition to showing consideration toward all the speakers, who have worked hard preparing for this meeting, you will reap the maximum benefit from the symposium by participating fully in both the formal sessions and informal events over the course of the 2-1/2 day meeting. There is a welcome reception/registration on Tuesday evening at Jesus College, Cambridge.


In addition to the technical talks given at the symposium, attendees will have an opportunity to present their work in an afternoon poster session on Wednesday, September 1. These posters will be displayed throughout the meeting and provide an opportunity for every participant to share information about his/her work. The material presented can be on posters, but could also include - particularly for those from industry - videos, demonstrations of devices, etc. Please let us know in advance if you plan to use any sort of device and need a table.  There are no outlets where we are holding the poster session so you will need to bring a fully-charged laptop if you want to show videos. Unfortunately, NAE does not have funding available to cover the cost of poster production. If this is a factor, the information can be presented on individual sheets of paper. Tacks will be provided. There will be walking tours of Cambridge and punting on the River Cam (weather permitting) on Thursday, September 2.

Information for US Participants

You will need to book your flights to London to arrive the morning of August 31st as clearing customs, navigating Heathrow, and the journey to Cambridge will take approximately 4 to 5 hours, this will ensure your arrival in time for the evening welcome reception and registration.


We have a block of rooms reserved at Jesus College, Cambridge. WiFi will be available at locations throughout the facility, but there will not be hair dryers and tolietries are not provided. Check in will begin at 2pm on August 31st. If you arrive after midnight when the gate is locked, please ring for the porter to be let in and collect your room key and delegate packet.. Your room in Cambridge, except for incidentals, will be direct-billed to our host beginning with check-in on August 31 and check-out on September 3. If needed, we will also cover the cost of your room in the London Heathrow area the evening of September 3 at the Radisson Edwardian Heathrow. If you will be arriving prior to August 31 or leaving after September 4, you will be responsible for your own arrangements. Ground Transportation

For transport from Heathrow Airport to and from Cambridge, please make a reservation with National Express Bus that goes directly between Heathrow to Cambridge for approximately $50 each way at popular. Make a reservation at the time of your airline booking to ensure your seat! Buses leave every hour and take 2.5 to 3 hours.

Or travel by train via London Underground (The Tube) (approx.1 hour/$6) to Kings Cross Station in London and by train to Cambridge, approximately $30 each way (exclusive of the $6 subway fare), leaving every 15 minutes and taking approximately 1 hour. For tickets and fares use this site

Please click this Map of Cambridge for directions from the train and bus stations to Jesus College. The College is about a 20 minute walk from the train station and about a 10-minute walk from the bus station but there are taxis outside. Once you get to the college, go to the ‘Porter’s Lodge’, which is the main entrance, pick up the keys to your accommodation and delegate packet. Check in will begin at 2pm on August 31st.
